We already know that diabetes is a risk factor for dementia, but until now we didn’t know that elevated blood glucose levels in general can lead to dementia as well.
This study took about 2000 people and tracked them over 6.8 years. Over this time approximately 500, or 25% of the population developed dementia. 74 of the people with diabetes developed dementia, and 450 people without diabetes developed dementia.
What they found consistently was the people who developed dementia all had high glucose levels. The glucose levels don’t have to astronomically high either. 115 mg/dl is high enough to cause dementia.
